Dal Tadka Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal), washed and doused for 30 minutes
  • 1 onion, finely slashed
  • 2 tomatoes, finely slashed
  • 2-3 green chilies, cut
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic glue
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red bean stew powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 tablespoon slashed coriander leaves, for decorating

For the Tadka:

  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1-2 dried red chilies
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (thing)

Instructions:

In a strain cooker, add the drenched toor dal, slashed onions, tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic glue, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red stew powder, garam masala powder, salt, and 4 cups of water. Blend well.

Close the top and strain cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is cooked and soft. When the strain is delivered, open the cover and blend the dal well. Assuming the dal is excessively thick, add some water and blend well.

Heat ghee or oil in a dish over medium intensity. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, dried red chilies, and asafoetida (hing). Allow them to snap.

Add the tadka to the dal and blend well. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

Decorate with hacked coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.

Enjoy your homemade Dal Tadka!
